12/31/2018 0 Comments New Year's EveWhat better way to say good bye to 2018 than use the facilities at the new Aldergrove Community Centre. A family skate with the grand kids followed by a swim in the heated outdoor swimming pool. You can't really complain too much about winter weather in Langley!
11/3/2018 0 Comments Nicomekl Enhancement SocietyIt was a bit of a wet and breezy Saturday morning when I popped into the fish hatchery run by the Nicomekl Enhancement Society. The purpose of my visit was to drop off the $10,800.00 donation raised by the Langley Rotary Clubs in support of their efforts. These guys do a great job! They raise and release some 400 to 500,000 Chinook, Chum and Coho salmon into the Nicomekl. This time of year is busy for them as the salmon have started returning. It’s an amazing process to watch and the Society has a standing offer for any group that wants to come down on any Tuesday, Friday and Sunday from 9:00 to 12:00 AM. It’s a great opportunity for children, business or social groups to get together and find out what a great bunch of volunteers are doing to ensure that our natural beauty continues to thrive in the Township of Langley! 10/11/2018 0 Comments Municipal Elections - 2018The 2018 election for the Township of Langley is fast approaching. There's a host of great candidates - 3 for Mayor, 23 for Councillor and 7 for School Trustees.
Congratulations to all the candidates that have decided to seek the approval of their fellow citizens in order to guide the community over the next four years. From my experience, it's a very exciting time! I salute you for putting your name forward! General Voting Day is 20 October 2018 and I look forward to large crowds of Langley residents taking advantage of their democratic rights and voting on that day or at one of the advance voting opportunities that have been established. Remember, these are the people that we are choosing to ensure that our property tax dollars are being spent in a wise and efficient manner. Please take the time to read their biographies and attend some of the many candidate meetings that are taking place during the campaign. I've dug up a few statistical points from previous elections. Let's see if we can improve on theses numbers. Talk to your family and friends! Let's see if we can double or even triple the numbers! 8/30/2018 0 Comments Regimental FallenOur recent trip to France allowed time to visit the grave sites of fallen members of my Regiment, the 15th Field Artillery Regiment RCA. During World War II the 15th Field had been re-roled into Coast Artillery with emplacements built at Stanley Park, Point Grey and Yorke Island. In 1939 the Reserve Brigade was mobilized to man these fortifications but as time went on many of the members volunteered to join units deployed overseas. Not all of them came home...My long term project is to record their history for ours and future generations to remember them. Lest we forget.

The 18 Pounder was the most common piece of ordnance in the Canadian Artillery during World War One. My former regiment, The 15th Field Artillery Regiment RCA, was originally equipped with this gun when formed in 1920. The Regiment also precedes two batteries the 31st Battery in France and the 68th Battery in Russia. Both of those units were equipped with the 18 pounder as well; most notably, 31 Battery fired 18 pounders during the artillery barrage leading up to the capture of Vimy Ridge.
In the beginning of the Second World War the 18 pounder was upgraded with the addition of pneumatic tires and served in a reserve capacity. I was fortunate in contacting Base Wainwright in Alberta at the same time they were looking to discard an old 18 pounder that had been sitting outside for 40 years. It has now been moved to Bessborough Armoury in Vancouver and is being restored under the watchful eyes of the Regimental Museum. What a great piece of history! Surrey Says Howdy to Howitzer Vancouver is now home to a really big, really rare gun. 6/15/2018 0 Comments Tip n' TasteIt's always great to be involved in the community and raise funds for a great cause. How can yogo wrong when it involves 500,000 fish and 500 people tasting beer. I was the chairman of a great team that put on this year's Tip 'n Taste. Our beneficiary was the Nikomekl Enhancement Society and they did a great job helping us sell tickets to the event. The Rotary Club of Langley, Central Langley Club and the Sunshine Rotary Club all pitched in and we had a great time.
