10/5/2017 0 Comments Rotary Interpretive CentreThe posts and beams have arrived! This stage of the building requires true professionals to ensure that the structure is installed as per the plans and specification. Beautiful workmanship!
9/23/2017 0 Comments Reconciliation BootcampSk'elep Reconciliation & Indigenize It presented a second part to their Reconciliation Bootcamp at the Kwantlen Nation Cultural Center Longhouse. It was another great day that again featured some excellent narrative from all the participants. The world would be a better place if we all took the time to stop and listen to what others have to say.
9/23/2017 0 Comments Fraser HighlandersThe Fraser Highlanders were looking for a topic for dinner and came up with a unique idea. What did the artillery battle look like on the Plains of Abraham? Apparently no one had thought of this question before so it was decided to reach out to the retired artillery Colonel/Regimental Sergeant Major (That's me!) and see if I could give a talk on the subject. Well, that was quite the interesting subject to research.
Great dinner, great group of people. Thanks for the invite. 9/15/2017 0 Comments BC Exchange Teachers AssociationAttended a great barbeque with the BC Exchange Teachers Association hosted by Mel and June in Murrayville. My wife, Catherine, is the President of the organization and I'm the Secretary. The association is intended to assist foreign teachers on exchange in BC with any questions they might have and to organize some social outings that portray a bit of our Canadian culture. It's also a great opportunity to talk with other Canadian exchange teachers and relive some of the great times (and some of the hardships) encountered while on an exchange. The group at the barbecue included connections with Australia, Great Britain, France, Germany and Switzerland. Thanks to Mel and June for being such great hosts!
9/7/2017 0 Comments Where does the time fly?I've been so busy working on a bunch of projects that I've barely had time to update my own website! The big project has been the Rotary Interpretive Centre at the Derek Doubleday Arboretum. I've suggested to the Rotary Club that we should record the progress of the building on-line so that we can show the work of a bunch of dedicated volunteers. Of course some of my suggestions often involve my volunteering to do the work itself! Check out this link to the Rotary Club Site and enjoy the pictures and videos. https://www.facebook.com/langleyrotary/
Here's a great video about the simple safety lesson taught to drivers in the Netherlands. It would be worthwhile introducing it in BC if it could help save the life of a cyclist or prevent serious injury. Check it out here.
7/12/2017 1 Comment Aldergrove FairDid you see us at the Aldergrove Fair in our 1931 Field Artillery Tractor (FAT)? The truck was part of the Canadian Military Pattern (CMP) vehicles manufactured in Canada during the Second World War and shipped to countless countries overseas as well as equipping our own military. Our FAT pulls our 25 pounder howitzer which was the most common artillery piece in our army during the Second World War and in use up to and including the Korean War. We maintain the equipment and dress up in the vintage uniforms in order to ensure that our military heritage is not lost on today's generation. C'mon over and say hi if you see us at any of the events in the Valley!
6/27/2017 0 Comments Rotary Tip ‘n Taste 2017It was a busy Rotary day today! Right after the painting of the benches at the Arboretum I attended the final meeting for the 15th Annual Tip ‘n Taste which will be held on Friday, 7 July 2017 at the Coast Hotel & Convention Centre in Langley, BC . This is a fundraising event operated by the Rotary Club of Langley, Rotary Club of Langley Central and the Rotary Club of Langley Sunrise. The main beneficiary of this year's event is the Salvation Army Gateway of Hope.
Grab a friend, or two or three and come down and sample the craft beer. Don't forget to say hi. I'll be there helping out the other Rotarians that have volunteered their time for the community. A big thank you to my fellow Rotarians from the Langley Club that came out to sand and varnish the benches in the Derek Doubleday Arboretum. I'm glad I was of some help with the brush today!
Interested in joining the Rotary Club? Drop me a line and I'll let you know how to go about it! |
